HHIR's Year-End Lists, Part 2: Top 7 Monster Hits of 2007 That Made Me Want to Destroy My Radio and/or Jump in Front of a Moving Truck

#7

Timbaland - Give it to Me (feat. Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake)
A posse cut with subliminal disses strung around throughout the lyrics. Oh, I forgot to mention: the 'posse' consists of a pair of pop artists.
LAME!
[1,000,000 spins on every radio station later...]
LAME & ANNOYING AS F*CK!!!

#6

Akon - Don't Matter
Okay, don't me wrong: this song wasn't that bad. But 'kon totally swiped and jack the melody of R. Kelly's 'Ignition (Remix)' on this one. SMH!

#5

Fergie - Glamorous (feat. Ludacris)
After a while, I gave in to 'Fergalicious', but this one was just horrible... Please, someone tell her that only Biggie and Fabolous get a pass on spelling out words that end with '-ous'. It's a Brooklyn thing.

#4

Chris Brown - Kiss Kiss (feat. T-Pain)
Whiny overload. Need I say more? Hot beat though...

#3

T-Pain - Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin') (feat. Yung Joc)
There are simply no redeeming qualities about this song...
At all!
'nuff said.

#2

Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls
Horribly annoying song that hopefully didn't inspire anyone to actually kill themselves. Although I've gotta say: who wouldn't have suicidal thoughts after hearing this trash. LOL.
Speaking of 'Suicidal Thoughts', an interesting fact: The video for this film was shot inside Johnnie's Diner, an inoperative building in Los Angeles which replicates the look of old school burger shops/breakfast spots. The building itself is only used for filming: movies, tv shows, music videos. On the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax, the building is directly adjacent to the Peterson Automotive Museum. This is the same corner where Christopher Wallace, a.k.a. The Notorious B.I.G., was gunned down. I just think this whole thing's interesting particularly due to the fact that Sean Kingston looks like a young Biggie. Just sayin'....
Aight, and the #1 'Monster Hit of 2007 That Made Me Want to Destroy My Radio and/or Jump in Front of a Moving Truck' is...

#1

Soulja Boy - Crank That (Soulja Boy)
I wouldn't be surprised if there was a statistic that stated that as soon as this song became a hit, the number of atheists in the world boosted at an exorbitant rate.

Seriously, why would G-d allow this?

HHIR's Year-End Lists, Part 1: Top 7 Guilty Pleasures of 2007

You know these are true...
And if they aren't, then feel free to laugh at me...
;-D

#7

Gym Class Heroes - Cupid's Chokehold
I'm sorry, but the fact that they sampled Supertramp and totally Hip-Hopped it out was Grade A in my book. Did it get annoying as f*ck after a while? Absolutely! But I dug into this one for a while...

#6

Smitty + Robin Thicke - Died in Your Arms Tonight
Okay, I guess I just like songs that sample other songs that I already like. Scott Storch flipped this 80's classic into a frenzied club banger with a catchy hook. Based on the consensus of practically everyone I know, however, this song was wick-wick-WACK. But I dunno... I kinda got hooked in.

#5

MIMS - This is Why I'm Hot
In my review of this song earlier in the year, I stated that the track had "mundane lyrics." And boy were they mundane! But this was the kind of track where it didn't really matter... I liked this song 'cuz it was hot. If you didn't, then you're not!

#4

British Girls
Now I'll be honest: British girls are always my guilty pleasure. LOL. Who doesn't love a British accent? I digress...
Our friends from across the Atlantic owned the music scene this year, particularly during the first half. Cheers!

#3

Ciara - Like a Boy
So addictive. Word to 50.

#2

Beyoncé - Irreplaceable
Yes, I know the song was originally released in late 2006. But I only really got into it in '07, and it stayed on repeat on nearly every radio station for at least 4 months. Great song; very catchy.

California + Detroit = Caltroit

Aside from the fact that I've got personal ties to both Cali and the Mo', I've always been intrigued by the stylistic connections between these two musical hotspots, starting off with the one and only...
With that being said, I'm glad to see cats from Cali and the D hookin' up to make nothing but good music.

Over the weekend, I came across an excellent mixtape (sounds better than most rappers' albums) simply titled 'Caltroit.' Spearheaded by West-coast legend DJ Warrior, Inglewood's up-and-comer Bishop Lamont & J Dilla torch-carrier Black Milk (whose 'Popular Demand' I reviewed earlier this year), 'Caltroit' is a Hip-Hop family affair. Word to Sly Stone.

'Caltroit' features great 'troiters like Phat Kat, Royce Da 5'9", Guilty Simpson, Illa J, T3 and others; Cali boys like Rass Kass, Planet Asia, Mistah Fab; and everyone else in between like Busta Rhymes, Stat Quo & Kardinal Offishall. All that, just to name a few... And if that wasn't enough, Mr. Invincible/Invisible himself, Dr. Dre, co-signs the record on track 3, 'On Top Now'.

Here are a couple of preview tracks that I think you might like:

F*ck it... Though DJ Warrior posted it up on his Myspace page, you can cop the whole album right here as well (I've posted plenty of mirrors):

GZA - Liquid Swords [The Samples]

So as you've heard, GZA has been making plenty of noise all over the globe, and as I was talking to HHIR-er DJ Raida last night about how I prefer Liquid Swords over Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, I came across the final song I needed to complete the Liquid sample set (shouts to RagnaroK from the Wu boards).

So without further adieu, enjoy:

01. 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' by Willie Mitchell
• Sampled for 'Liquid Swords' by GZA (feat. RZA)

"Overturning Kingdoms and Clans"

The other night I was reading the Analects of Confucius, classic literature attributed to the famed philosopher from ancient China. Comprised in a set of 20 "books" (don't worry, they're very, very short), The Analects of Confucius are full of wisdom, eccentricities, history, and advice on how to build one's character. Going for the 'home stretch', I was gearing towards finishing the Analects that night. As I was reading Book 17 however, I was struck with awe. 'Verse 18':
I hate to see sharp mouths overturning kingdoms and clans.
Kingdoms and Clans? Look, maybe this is a bit of a reach, but what else would you have thought of if you were reading about "sharp mouths", "kingdoms" and "clans"?

Now don't get me wrong, I love Wu-Tang (lest we forget, they're for the children!). And while in my summation all of the members have been doing their thing, I feel like I've got to take Raekwon to task for some of the things he's said and done in recent history.

Exhibit A (to the left): we have Raekwon at a NYC concert in November of '06 calling out Jay-Z for his relatively lackluster Kingdom Come. [original link]
Exhibit B (to the right): we have Raekwon chattin' it up with Miss Info over his issues with RZA in regards to handling Wu-Tang's new album, 8 Diagrams.

Okay, let's put this into perspective: OB4CL is one of my favorite Hip-Hop albums of all time. I've been a fan of Rae' since I heard him rapping about 'sticking up whiteboys at ball courts.' But for a guy who's spent the last year or so talking smack, he's gotta at least back it up. In 2007, Rae sponsored the totally wacktastic 'Polluted Water' (I tried to like it, I really did) by his weed carriers Ice Water. That was about it.

Back to the videos: Granted, Kingdom Come wasn't what it should have been, but Jigga returned this year sending out (what I felt was) a message to the hater(s):
Chef, look what I cooked...
Once again, I could be reachin', (word to Digable P's).

All in all, please get it correct: I'm still rooting for Rae' and I can't wait until OB4CLII comes out. But until then, please tell him to just stay in the kitchen 'til it's ready...

I'm getting hungry, but I'm not in the mood for beef...

Hip-Hop 4 Prez: Kidz in the Hall Support Obama Through Song

Having followed Obama’s political career from its early stages, Kidz In The Hall’s MC Naledge is very excited to be a part of the movement for change. “From Chicago’s Southside, to The University of Pennsylvania, Kidz In The Hall has always promoted positive change in American communities through social action. The message at the forefront of this soulful anthem is that no one should settle for less than success, because each one of us has the ability to change this world for the better. “Work To Do” is not necessarily a song that was meant as a “campaign song,” but more so a philosophy on how to approach life in general. I think much of what is wrong in my community is that hope has been lost by many of my peers. What many fail to realize is that one person can control his or her own destiny, it just requires due diligence and the ability to fight adversity. I happen to think that Barack Obama embodies everything that is promising for the future of our nation and represents the hope I sought to speak on in the song. Being from Chicago, I have seen his rise to prominence first hand and I can honestly say that I believe he is the best option for our next president.”

Murs - Yesterday & Today [VIDEO]

One of my favorite underground artists out of the West Coast (plus he grew up around my parts out here in LALA-land), Murs dropped this joint 'Yesterday & Today' last year and I've still been bumping it (plus the rest of the 'Revenge' album). It's got that vintage appeal to it, with a fun, uplifting message from the underdog's point of view. Totally cool.

...and the video is hilarious to boot.

Bump this!

Insomniacs Club with Nas & Cypress Hill

"From the spliff that I lift and inhale, it ain't hard to tell..."
- Nas; 'It Ain't Hard to Tell' [Lyrics]

"My oven is on high, when I roast the quail/
Tell ____ _____ to go and inhale/
"
- Cypress Hill; 'I Wanna Get High' [Lyrics]

Article:

Earlier this week in New Hampshire Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke candidly about his past experimentation with drugs and alcohol in high school, and on Saturday—after a question on medicinal marijuana—Obama was prodded a bit further and asked whether or not he had ever inhaled.

"I did," the senator from Illinois said to light applause. "It's not something I'm proud of. It was a mistake as a young man."

The question was a reference to a line made famous by former President Bill Clinton who, while admitting to trying marijuana, said he did not inhale.

"I never understood that line," Obama continued. "The point was to inhale. That was the point."

Critic’s Notebook
By the Book
by Sasha Frere-Jones
December 3, 2007

In too many instances, hip-hop has become a celebration of ruthless self-interest, delivered by performers who don’t dare crack a smile for fear of losing status. That’s not where the music started, as two new books of photographs make clear. In “Born in the Bronx,” by Joe Conzo, the d.j.s and m.c.s do their share of scowling (and occasionally brandish weapons), but they also smile, wear fedoras, dance, and look like the skinny kids they are. Though Conzo’s photographs document hip-hop between 1977 and 1982, a time line by the writer Jeff Chang asserts that the genre’s origins stretch back to 1963, when the Cross Bronx Expressway tore the borough in half. Janette Beckman’s “The Breaks” picks up where Conzo leaves off. Beckman, an Englishwoman, captured a variety of young performers in New York with a taste for bright colors: Salt ’n Pepa, the Native Tongues Posse, and Slick Rick. That this vivid local culture would become a big and slightly chilly business lends a strange aura to these remarkable books. ♦

This week we've got a pre-recorded interview/conversation with Q-Tip, frontman of legendary rap group A Tribe Called Quest (Rizoh's favorite... I still slide with the Wu; no love lost).

Unfortunately, my FM-recorder got a little lazy though, and skipped out on the last 5-10% of the interview, but I've still got a good 33+ minutes worth of Tip that's bound to enlighten. Enjoy:

"The China-men built the railroad, the Indians saved the Pilgrim/
And in return the Pilgrim killed 'em/
They call it it Thanksgiving, I call your holiday hell-day/
Cause I'm from poverty, neglected by the wealthy/..."

What you are actually celebratin'/

to murder any blacks that resisted Christianity/
These Moors, these black men and women/
were from Baghdad, Turkey/
And today, you eat the turkey, for your "Thanksgiving" day/

Who were the forefathers of your mothers and fathers/
Now fight the power, you b*tch-*ss n*ggaz!/..."

He took us off to stolen lands it seemed like hell for sure/
Happy Thanksgiving/
With the crack and the guns, death and disease they called for you and your/

George Bush: Pardon All The Turkeys
by: Bill Maher

Last year, Mumia Abu-Jamal released a very poignant and well-articulated radio essay concerning the "holiday" of Thanksgiving. I find it amazing and a bit disappointing that people hardly ever analyze the true meaning of this day, and how historically hypocritical it truly is. Anyways...

This year I've mixed this same radio speech with the instrumental to Brother Ali's defiant 'Uncle Sam G-d Damn'. Enjoy:
