Jay-Z & Raekwon - New York (Prod. by Hasan Insane)*

9/11: Roc-A-Fella vs G Unit

Roc-A-Fella 1
G Unit 0
...so far

For those that remember, Jay-Z took the top spot in sales when he dropped The Black Album in 2003. Remember which album bowed at second? Yup! Beg for Mercy by G Unit. Now granted, it was a G Unit album - not a Fiddy album. And the circumstances are a little different now that it's 'Ye and not Jay dropping this time around. But what do you think is gonna happen? President Hov had this to say:
"I think it's great, I think it's a fantastic day for hip-hop," Jay said last week at his Rocawear offices in Manhattan. "I remember having those dates [facing against] Outkast a couple of times. I actually had one with G-Unit [with Beg for Mercy]. It's great. It's a fantastic thing for hip-hop, especially retail. I know they're loving it. You're driving people to the store. We love it, we think it's a fantastic thing."

Sample & Example: Dick Hyman & J Dilla

Finding Forever, Common's new album, hits stores today. The beats, emotions and general atmosphere of the album pays homage to the late J Dilla. Who better to feature on a S&E post than King James himself?
Listening to this sample will make you realize how special Dilla was (and is). He had such a great nack for pickin' out out-of-this-world samples...

Music Video with Lyrics:

2pac Must Be Rollin' in His..........Cuba

Okay.

A while back I told you about a new 2pac album coming out (no, not the one I'm crafting which can be previewed to the right, and released on Sept. 13th ;-P). Early reports told us this album would be produced by Daz and called "Evolution: Duets & Remixes." Well since then, they've added the Nu Mixx Klassics tag. Fine. I wasn't fond of the first volume but hey, I'm always interested in hearing some 'new' 'Pac. My favorable hopes were initiated by the 'troubled thug' first shot 'Pain' featuring Styles P & Butch Cassidy. To be fair, I'm still anticipating to hear a couple of tracks from the album (such as the rumored M-1 of dead prez & Daz "collaboration" titled 'Lost Souls'). But I just listened to the 2nd "single" from the album, and I'm borderline appalled.

Wu-Tang Contest: Show RZA Whatchu Got!

From now until August 20, Wu-Tang Clan honcho RZA, in partnership with rap instrumental download emporium/social networking site LOUD.com, is offering fans the chance to rhyme over fresh tracks from Bobby Digital himself. And, if RZA and LOUD like what they hear, you might be on your way to Hawaii to open for the Wu-Tang at their September 1 spot on the Rock the Bells tour.

Aspiring MCs (or, hell, Lil Wayne if he's bored) can access the brand-new RZA beats from LOUD.com, where they're available for free download (PC-only, sorry) if you sign up. After spitting hot fire and submitting the results to the site, LOUD.com will whittle down the finalists to ten. RZA will then select the winner, to be announced August 27. Mic skills are helpful, but not a prerequisite (see: every Cappadonna verse ever).

Just remember: very few words effectively rhyme with "Shaolin", and retrofitting Wu-Tang slang into your own well-honed flow is, as a genius once said, "mad fuckin' dangerous."

Coming Soon: Al Green & ?uestlove

Soul music legend Al Green is set to release a disc of duets with The Roots' Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson at the helm.

Tentatively titled, The Duets Album, Green's set is slated to feature collaborations with Anthony Hamilton and D'Angelo.

"Anthony Hamilton and D'Angelo just wanted to come into the studio to hear me sing, but I wanted to write some songs," Green told the Memphis Flyer. "So me and Anthony did two songs, and he did the background on another one. I'm hoping for the best. I want to do a good job."

There still are a few major decisions to be made before the project is complete.

"They're trying to pick between Alicia Keys and the new girl from Blue Note, Joss Stone," Green said, of a potential collaboration. "It's gonna come out [later this year]. I wrote 15 songs for it, but they can't use but 12."

As SOHH previously reported, the soul legend's new CD, which is expected to have a heavy hip-hop influence, is scheduled for release in September via Blue Note Records.

In related news, Green will make a return to his roots at the B.B. King Blues Festival 2007 where he is performing alongside B. B. King and Etta James.

50 Cent & Kanye West: Dropping on 9/11

One raps about getting money, the other one raps about wanting to get his money right. They both can claim to be among the most popular rappers in the world, but who is going to sell more copies of his new album in its first week? That's what everybody wants to know.

On Thursday (July 19), sources confirmed that Kanye West's Graduation LP has now shifted from September 18 to September 11. You might remember that, not too long ago, Interscope Records pushed 50 Cent's album Curtis back one week from September 4 to September 11 (see "50 Cent's Curtis Is Bumped Again — Album Now Slated For September 11 Release"). Let the games begin.

One thing is for sure: It's going to be fun watching and listening to the two jockeying for position. Both are notorious for making controversial remarks to generate interest with the fans and media alike — and that's not to mention the hits they both have under their sleeves for their respective albums.

50 has released a slew of videos, but his latest, "I Get Money," has gotten perhaps the best reception so far. Oddly enough, Kanye said at Hot 97 in New York on Wednesday that 50's record is in fact his favorite song right now. He even did a freestyle over the instrumental.

On Thursday night, 50 told Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97 that he would embrace the competition.

"I hope they see and understand what's getting ready to happen," he said. "I'm coming September 11. If Kanye comes that day, he comes that day. That'll be great. I think his people are smart, I think he's smart too ... I think they'll move [their release date]. But I'm coming September 11."

50 also said that he's recorded eight new songs for Curtis since the album's original June 26 release date was postponed.

"I didn't like the response I was getting," he explained to Flex about the reception to his first two singles, "Amusement Park" and "Straight to the Bank." "I was like, 'Whoa.' Flat out, I put the music out, I'm getting the response, but it ain't what I'm used to. That ain't me. You ain't responding how you are supposed to respond to my records. I'm like wait a minute, I gotta regroup ... I'm at a point where they want to tell me no, so I give you something undeniable ['I Get Money']."

West is 2-for-2 in his own right, in terms of singles from his Graduation (see "Kanye West Says He's 'Ready To Take Over The World Once Again' "). "Can't Tell Me Nothing" and "Stronger" have been positively received, while a third single, "The Good Life" (featuring T-Pain), is on the way. A video for the song is already in the can.

Fiddy Flip-Flops Opinion on George Bush (a.k.a. G-Dubb)

By Roman Wolfe

Rapper 50 Cent may have plenty of enemies in Hip-Hop, but the chart topping rapper is also taking aim at outgoing embattled president, George W. Bush Jr.

During a 2005 interview with GQ Magazine in which 50 Cent and Kanye West won "Men of the Year" honors, 50 Cent expressed a desire to meet President Bush, who's approval ratings recently sank to around 29%, mostly due to a failed strategy in the administration's war against Iraq.

In a new interview with New York Magazine, 50 Cent has changed his views on the Republican leader and distanced himself from the current Commander-in-Chief.

"George Bush has a talent: He has less compassion than the average human," 50 Cent said. "By all means, I don’t aspire to be like George Bush."

The remarks are a sharp contrast to comments 50 Cent made about President Bush in the 2005 interview with GQ, when he claimed that he would have voted for President Bush, had it not been for his prior felony conviction, which prevents him from taking part in any elections.

"I wanna meet George Bush, just shake his hand and tell him how much of me I see in him," 50 told GQ.

50 Cent's new opinion of President George W. Bush is shared by many Americans, according to poll data released last week by Gallup and the USA Today...

Jon Lovitz Keeps It Gully

July 17, 2007 -- IT was fight night at an L.A. comedy club last week when Jon Lovitz roughed up Andy Dick over the murder of their "Saturday Night Live" colleague, Phil Hartman.

Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada, who witnessed the assault, said, "Jon picked Andy up by the head and smashed him into the bar four or five times, and blood started pouring out of his nose." Lovitz told Page Six, "All the comedians are glad I did it because this guy is a [bleep]hole."

Lovitz and Dick have been at loggerheads since a 1997 Christmas party at Hartman's house, five months before his troubled wife Brynn flipped out, fatally shooting Hartman, then killing herself. "Andy was doing cocaine, and he gave Brynn some after she had been sober for 10 years. Phil was furious about it - and then five months later he's dead," said Lovitz, adding that when he filled in on Hartman's "Newsradio" sitcom, "I told Andy, 'I wouldn't be here now if you hadn't given Brynn that cocaine.' "

Last year, Lovitz related, a drunken Dick strolled up to his table at Ago in West Hollywood, rudely downed his guests' peach liqueur drinks, and "looked at me and said, 'I put the "Phil Hartman hex" on you - you're the next one to die.' I said, 'What did you say?' and he repeated it. I wanted to punch his face in, but I don't hit women."

When the two ran into each other at the Laugh Factory last Wednesday, "I wanted him to say he was sorry for the 'Phil Hartman hex,' " Lovitz told us. "First he says, 'I don't remember saying that.' Then he leans in and says, 'You know why I said it? Because you said I killed Phil Hartman.' Which I never said. Then he asked me to be in his new movie.

"I grabbed him by the shirt and leaned him over and said, 'I don't want to be in your movie! I don't want to be in your life!' I pushed him against the rail. Then I pushed him again really hard. A security guard broke it up. I'm not proud of it . . . but he's a disgusting human being." Dick's rep said he had no comment.

Dick's weirdness has been well documented. Last year, he licked the faces of Farrah Fawcett, Carrie Fisher and Patton Oswalt, then groped and bit the hand of Post reporter Mandy Stadtmiller at a comedy-festival taping.

I don't often come out and say this, but if there's a musical artist or group you should support, P.E. is definitely one of them.

Common: One of the last TRUE freestylers left...

What's New for the Wu?

By Jonathan Cohen

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Ol' Dirty Bastard is gone, but the rapper's spirit looms large over "The 8 Diagrams," the Wu-Tang Clan's first album since 2001.

The set is due in October via SRC (a joint venture of Steven Rifkind and Universal Motown).

"He left a piece of himself in each and every one of us," group member RZA told Billboard of ODB, a founding member of the group, who died in 2004. "Even in the performance of some of the lyrics, you'll hear a style or attitude that he injected."

Although the hip-hop collective has been active on the road since last year, its members didn't hit the studio until April. "Me personally, I wasn't ready until then," RZA admitted. "I reached out when I knew I was 100 percent ready to do it, and everybody came to the table."

Beyond the ODB tribute "Life Changes," the album will include tracks like "You Can't Stop Me Now," "We Got This," "Campfire" and "Thug World," which features System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian. Rapper Q-Tip appears on an as-yet-unnamed track that may wind up being the first single.

For a change, RZA yielded some of the production duties to a handful of major names he isn't quite ready to reveal. "You will hear some unique-sounding stuff and a vintage hip-hop spirit," he promised.

RZA said he is also working with an ODB outtake that originally was recorded for the group's seminal album "Enter the 36 Chambers."

"I lost it, because the DJ who handled my equipment back then, we just got disconnected," he said. "He actually found the tape about eight months ago and flew out to California with it. The problem is, it doesn't sound all that great, because this was 1992 or 1993 when it was recorded. But ODB's performance is f---in' immaculate. So maybe I can find some software to restore it and put it on as a bonus track."

Wu-Tang will be on the road this summer with the Rock the Bells tour. Despite its members' busy schedules, RZA is hopeful the group is now back together for good. "We're rekindling flames," he said. "There's a strong potential this could be a long campaign, so this will keep us on the road together, on TV together and keep us working together."

In related news, Wu-Tang member Raekwon will unveil the debut album from his Ice Water clique, "Icewater: Polluted Water" August 28 via Babygrande. The Staten Island-based quartet is bolstered by cameos from Method Man, Busta Rhymes, Three 6 Mafia, Rick Ross, Remy Ma and Jagged Edge on the project.

As promised, Michael Moore comes back to CNN to counter Sanjay Gupta's "fact checking" report. I'm glad Mike picked up on what I saw in Gupta's segment (Cuba being blocked out as stated in my previous post).
